Hugh has been a professional player and teacher since leaving the Royal College of Music in 1995. At the RCM Hugh gained a Bmus(Hons) degree with a first class pass for his final recital and a dipRCM(teachers) teaching diploma.
Immediately after leaving the RCM Hugh went on tour to Japan with London Brass and then to Abu Dhabi and Dubai with his own brass group, Capital Brass Quintet. Various other touring and recordings followed with orchestras and ensembles like the London Classical Players and the English Concert (on original instruments).
In 1998 Hugh took a sabbatical from music to try his hand in other areas but was drawn back to full time music in 2000. This time Hugh found himself working, more often than not, in the theatre, predominantly for The Royal Shakespeare Company at the Barbican where he appeared in the orchestra and on stage and for the D'Oyle Carte Opera Company at the Savoy Theatre, London.
Throughout this time Hugh was appearing in various show bands in the West End such as Les Miserables, Anything Goes, My Fair Lady and more recently Chicago, Evita and The Sound of Music.
In 2004 Hugh went on tour with Chicago the Musical featuring Marti Pellow which took him all over the UK as well as to Greece, China and Japan. Hugh was also one of the conductors on this production.
Following on immediately from this Hugh played on the UK tour of Cameron Macintosh's production of My Fair Lady as well as being 3rd Musical Director for the production.
At the same time as keeping busy as a player Hugh has maintained a steady stream of private trumpet pupils and taught at a number of schools. He is currently brass teacher at University College School Junior Branch in Hampstead, London and he has just set up his own teaching practice from his home in Surrey. Since 2000 Hugh has worked regularly as a workshop leader for Education Group in many schools across the country.
In August 2005 Hugh moved to Milford in Surrey with his wife Jill Farrow (a busy pianist, keyboard player, accompanist and teacher) where their son Edward was born in February 2006. Hugh finished touring in August 2006 and is now enjoying a busy freelance career in both playing and teaching.
